There are many practical reasons why you might want to build a chicken coop in your backyard and start raising a few hens. For one, farm-fresh, hormone-free eggs are a delicious, nutrient-rich source of daily protein. Another reason is that the eggs you gather from your backyard chicken coop will have more vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids and beta-carotene than the ones you purchase from the grocery store, with less cholesterol and saturated fat.

The best reason of all, though, is that raising a few chickens in your backyard will be a lot of fun.

Chickens make great, low-maintenance pets. But like any other outdoor pet, they need a comfortable home that provides shelter from the elements and protection from predators.

If you have been thinking about what it would be like to have fresh eggs in the morning from chickens you’ve raised, then you have come to the right place.

It’s chicken month over at The Home Depot Garden Club. You will find info on all things related to backyard chickens, from Raising Chickens 101 and the Top 5 Myths About Raising Chickens, to complete step-by-step instructions on how to build a chicken coop.

To help you get started on your hen house, here’s a short two-part video put together by Chris from The Home Depot Community Forums that will show you exactly how it’s done.
