Christmas Decorating by Carrie Waller of Dream Green DIY

Designer Carrie Waller understands the importance of caffeine on Christmas morning. Santa goes to a lot of trouble to fill your stockings, so you at least ought to be fully alert when you start the Christmas morning fun. That’s why she had the ingenious idea of including a coffee station among her Christmas decorating ideas for us.

Carrie writes about DIY and design at Dream Green DIY. Carrie took part in our Holiday Style Challenge, in which we send some of our favorite bloggers a mystery box of Home Depot Christmas decorating goodies, and let them amaze us with their Christmas decor styling.

Carrie’s blue and gold Christmas tree is a masterpiece, and it looks so comfortable in her teal and yellow living room. We love the way she very cleverly put her own spin on a couple of Christmas decorating ideas she found on Pinterest, too. And with freshly brewed coffee on hand, how could this be a better place for opening presents?

Read on to see how she worked her magic.

I admit it…I’m a little design obsessed. Whether for myself or for a client, chances are that you’ll find me juggling table lamps, brass animals and accessory pillows just about any day of the week. That said, I have never been all that keen on holiday styling. Call it laziness, call it whatever you like, but my strength has (sadly) never been in seasonal decor. This year though, with the support of The Home Depot, I was determined to break my reverie and indulge in all things Christmas. I am proud to say that I am an official holiday styling convert!

As is typical for me, I decided to jump into this project feet first by crafting a look that flowed throughout the entire first floor of our home. So, in addition to several updates in the living room, I focused a little extra holiday love in the kitchen by arranging a coffee station fit for Christmas morning and (who am I kidding?) all of the happy days leading up to it.

First up, the living room. [Take a look the house tour on her blog to see Carrie's living before getting its Christmas makeover. -ed.]

The star of the show is quite obviously our tree. I wrapped it with spools of shimmery blue and silver holiday ribbon and then added a couple armloads of shatterproof gold and teal ornaments. My main focus throughout this process was creating a look that felt natural within our year-round decor. We gravitate towards colors like teal, yellow, gray, silver and brass, so instead of the standard red and green, I went all out with blue and gold. By keeping it within the scope of our everyday style, I only needed to add a few holiday-specific accessories to set the mood.

Christmas Decorating: Small Treasures on Shelf

I had probably a little too much fun getting inspired by the Pinterest board my fellow Style Challengers have been posting into this season. Things like the gold chalkboard “mistletoe” art by Lianne Tokey (available online), and the framed craft paper Christmas tree silhouette (seen on the Sweet Tooth blog) decked out with wash tape and mini ornaments really helped to keep me on budget and on point with the theme. A couple of vintage elements, some tabletop Christmas trees, a festive new pillow, tree topper and collection of family heirlooms completed the styling for our space.

We love the look during the day, but nothing can really match the giddy mood created by those twinkling LED bulbs at night. With one click of our wireless remote to the plug in receiver hooked up to the tree and outlet, my husband and I are able to revel in the mood of the season thanks to our happily glowing tree in the corner.

But, of course, the fun didn’t stop there. We have loved getting to enjoy a little first-thing-in-the-morning Christmas cheer too with the addition of a brand new coffee station fit for the season. Our white Keurig Mini was the focal point of the styling, accentuated with a couple of thoughtful holiday accessories placed around it. A vintage brass bowl was repurposed as ornament display, while an extra white tabletop Christmas tree sits happily alongside more thrift store treasures. Things remain cohesive by keeping all of the pieces within that same teal and gold color palette.

Christmas Decorating: DIY Ledge Shelf for K-Cups

To corral our collection of K-Cups, I picked up two pre-cut hobby boards from the Home Depot and added two L-brackets to create a ledge silhouette. A few screws later, and we now have the perfect place to store our coffee without having to dig through boxes in the pantry.

    Hi Carrie!

I love the chalkboard paint calendar and think I will use it in my kitchen! What a wonderful idea! I want to know what the blue paint color is and if I can purchase from home depot? I love this color and want to use it on a project. Please let me know.

    thank you!

    • Thank you so much, Abigail! Do you mean the blue in our living room? It was actually painted by the previous owners, and is one of our favorites =) It’s called “Halcyon Green” by Sherwin Williams, but I’m SURE the Home Depot could color match!
