A cozy, nature-inspired mantel by Jenny of Everyday Occassions

In our Style Challenge series, we ask some of our favorite bloggers from around the web to surprise us with their ideas for creating a stylish and functional space using Home Depot products as a starting point.

Jenny is an entertaining expert who lives in Kansas City, Missouri, as well as the author of the blog Everyday Occasions. One look at her table settings and menus, and you’re sure to want an invitation to her next soirée. We challenged Jenny to style, not a table setting, but a cozy, fireplace mantel in her family room. Here, she shares with us her gorgeous Christmas mantel ideas.

For the Home Depot Holiday Style Challenge, I transformed my mantle into a Cozy Snow Dusted Fireside Escape. I tend to decorate during the holidays using natural materials when at all possible. I love the look of brown craft paper wrapped packages, burlap ribbon, pinecones, and fresh greenery. In the past, I have gravitated toward using a lot of white and gold for decorating the holidays that resulted in a sophisticated look, but since we’ve had our daughter, Emma, I’ve made a turn to the more cheerful and traditional colors.

When I opened the first box from Home Depot for the Style Challenge that appeared on my door step, I was thrilled to see these glittered birds.

The next box contained Martha Stewart ornaments with blown glass-type ornaments (my favorite) that looked like snow-dusted pinecones. Hum, now my mind has been whisked away to a woodsy, natural feel!

The story continued to come together when I opened the next two (really big!) boxes that contained two pre-lit snow-dusted trees potted in urns. Immediately, I envision a cozy fireplace surrounded by greens and trees, a roaring fire and snow-dusted trees. I wanted it to feel like a rustic snowed-in cabin in the woods all decked out for the holidays!

For the top of the mantel, I used some white pine sprigs dotted with real pinecones. Then I added the extra large pinecone ornaments to add whimsy to what would otherwise look ordinary. The final touch? A dusting of snow, inspired by the two potted trees that came pre-dusted.

Christmas ornaments aren’t just for the trees! To add a splash of color to the side table, I filled a silver bowl with red ornaments and added an oversize red and gold glittered ornament to the table.

As the fireplace is the center of this entire look, I decided to add gas fireplace logs which we purchased from The Home Depot to complete the cozy feel. We’ve just moved into our new home and don’t have the gas line installed yet, but as soon as we do, a night by the fire will be as simple as turning the key … I can’t wait!

I created our stockings and matching pillowcase from a blanket I found last year. I love that they look like they are hand-knitted … but it only took me an hour or two at the sewing machine!

I perched the glittered birds on the potted trees along with a natural burlap red stripped “ribbon” that is actually strapping for upholstery. That is all I needed to do to the trees — except plug them in! The branches were so natural and full-looking, they really didn’t need much extra décor at all. As someone who always has a “real” fresh tree and even “real” fresh garlands, I was very impressed with how real these trees seem.

To make the area inviting, I added cozy throws and pillows to the wing chairs that flank the fireplace.

Doesn’t it make you want to grab a Christmas book and curl up on a snowy night?! Or maybe toast some s’mores in the fireplace and watch “White Christmas” — let’s be honest, that is probably more likely!

    Jenny,

Love the ideas and those wingback chairs! Been looking for that color fabric everywhere. Where are they from? What color is that?

    Thank you!
