Here’s how to make a DIY leather tag. You can use the tag for a key ring or luggage tag. Just follow the step-by-step instructions for this fun craft project.
Leather belt or cork sheet
Ruler to use as straight edge
Hole punch pliers
Hammer or mallet
Paracord or keyring closures
Draw out your tag shape before you cut it
If the leather is thick, it works best to score it with an exacto knife and then cut with scissors
If you want to paint straight lines, always tape it off first
When using metal stamps, they work best on the smooth side of leather.
If you want to paint over the letter stamps, the non metallic options allow the stamps to show up best
Decide what shape you want your tag to be.
Take your belt, and using your pencil and ruler as a straight edge, draw out your shape.
Using your ruler as a straight edge, score the lines before you cut with scissors.
Mark the leather for the grommet hole.
Using punch pliers, make a hole in your leather.
To attach the grommet, push large side of the grommet through leather hole.
Place the small washer, round side out, on top of the leather and bottom of the grommet.
Round hardware goes below the bottom grommet.
Hammer evenly around all sides of metal hardware.
Look to ensure the grommet is attached securely.
Decide how you want your tag decorated.
Using painters tape or pencil, map out your personalization
If you want to use metal stamps, using painters tape, make a straight line to follow.
Place a letter attachment in end of stamper.
Line it up so your letter is straight and where you want it. (These spin easily, so be careful).
Press down using even pressure. The stamper will automatically pop when you’ve pressed hard enough.
Using paint pens, personalize the leather tag to your liking.
Add a Paracord to for a luggage tag, or key ring closure for key chain.
Add to your totes or keys and ENJOY!
