The ladies have spoken. The Home Depot is expanding our Do It Herself Workshops for women.

Here at The Home Depot we want everyone to have the skills and confidence to be a first class do-it-yourselfer. Our free weekly workshops are a great way to get step-by-step instruction and a little hands on experience learning how to do basic repairs and easy home improvements. They’re a lot of fun, too.

The workshops are very popular with experienced home improvement aficionados as well as beginners, and of course anyone and everyone is welcome.

More and more women are taking on DIY projects these days, and not all women grew up helping their dads (or moms!) with home repair projects. So someone suggested a while back that maybe we should try out some workshops created specifically for the ladies. That was the beginning of our Do It Herself Workshops here at The Home Depot.

The Daily Times of Blount County, Tennessee has a nice write up of one our earlier Do It Herself Workshops, at The Home Depot #742 in Maryville. Some of the attendees were single women trying to save money on their home repairs and others were “women who prefer hammers and drills to mixers and bread machines,” according to reporter, Linda Braden Albert. And all of the participants seemed to get a lot out of the workshop.

The first Do It Herself Workshops were so well received that we’ve started holding them in more Home Depot stores, and instead of holding them quarterly, we’re stepping them up to monthly — usually on the first Tuesday of the month at 6:30pm. (Not all Home Depots have them just yet, so check with your store.)

In select markets, we serve snacks and give away Home Depot gift cards and other DIY goodies. Plus, the workshops are always a lot of fun for the participants and the Home Depot associates who run them. They also turn out to be a good way to make new friends. District Manager Diana Kelly attended a workshop recently. She says there were lots of smiles and conversation as the participants got hands on experience installing a kitchen back splash, “but there was also a lot of personal networking going on, too.”

Plus, Kelly said, “everyone left with a sense of empowerment. It was wonderful.”

Check your local Home Depot store to see if its holding Do It Herself Workshops.

And, don’t forget the weekend workshops that already are happening at your local store. These aren’t designed specifically for women, but a lot of ladies do attend these. You can check the schedule for our free DIY workshops on the Home Depot website, or call your store for more information.

Attend a workshop and let us know how you liked it. We’d love to hear from you.
