A colorful fall garden with yellows, oranges and purples

Fall planting season is your chance to renew the look of your home with new seasonal colors and textures. We asked Cassity of the Remodelaholic home improvement blog to show us how she planned her beautiful and very colorful fall garden. She has some great fall planting ideas, and some beautiful photos of her garden, too.

I love to be surrounded by color, so when The Home Depot invited my husband Justin and me to do our fall planting with them, I knew I wanted to include lots and lots of hardy color. As a result of our complete backyard redesign this summer, we have one large “centerpiece” flower bed in our backyard — surrounded by our retaining wall/seat wallalongside our new patio, and, most importantly, directly in my view out of my kitchen window.

We chose mums and pansies that, with any luck, will last through our early frosts and keep the color as long as possible. I wanted warmer fall colors, like reds, yellows, and oranges, but then Justin showed up with these bluish purple asters. It wasn’t what I had in mind, but I should listen to his landscape-architect input more often (sorry, Honey!) because the violet adds a striking contrast.

We also added some structure and winter greenery with some smaller evergreen shrubs for when the colors fade. Because we like to have our yard look great without spending hours on upkeep, we love spike fertilizers and this Miracle-Gro Garden Soil, which we put around each plant as we planted. My motto is: feed your plants you won’t be disappointed with what they do.

We prepped the flower beds by weeding, removing some flowers, and bringing in some better, nutrient-rich soil. Then, we started planting with a small hedge of three cone-shaped evergreens called Dwarf Alberta Spruce.

Then we set out the flowers so we could get a feel for the color distribution and once we were happy, into the soil they went!

Once we had the plants in, we had Mother Nature’s help to give them a good drink (a two-hour rainstorm!) and then we could just enjoy our new flowers. And, boy, have we been loving all of the color!

  1. The colors make this back yard just pop! Very nice color scheme, and the orange Home Depot bucket looks perfect in there.
