Are you a student, faculty member or staff of a historically black college or university (HBCU) that could use a makeover? Could your dorm or administrative building use a fresh coat of paint? Would a flower garden enhance the entrance to your school?  Would you like to beautify your student center? If so, The Home Depot wants to give your school a makeover.

The Retool Your School grant program helps refurbish the campuses of HBCUs. The Home Depot is accepting entries from January 17 to February 7. Schools submit grant proposals, and students, faculty and communities go online and vote for their schools to win. Up for grabs are a $50,000 grand prize, a $25,000 school spirit prize and 11 $10,000 prizes.

Bethune-Cookman University in Dayton, FL claimed the 2011 grand prize with a proposal to install automated access doors and a wheelchair ramp in its student center. The ramps will accommodate students, faculty and staff members with disabilities.

In addition to the grand prize awarded to Bethune-Cookman, The Home Depot awarded 10 $10,000 prizes. Knoxville College and Howard University were among them.  Knoxville College students and volunteers used money to give the campus a vibrant makeover by painting benches and sidewalks and by adding flowers.
