The dining room is the one area of the home that really gets a workout during the holiday season, and that’s the perfect time to give this entertaining space a little update. This inspiration board shows you our take on a modern dining room.
THE FURNISHINGS, LIGHTING, AND WALL COLOR
We were inspired by the more modern silhouettes of the dining table and chairs. The Sable Brown Lombard Dining Table features a very simple, understated silhouette, but it also has a rather rough-hewn finish to the wood, which gives it a casual, farmhouse air. To pair with the Sable Dining Table, we chose the Rio Vista Chair, which like the Sable Dining Table, combines a dark wood with a sleek and modern frame. In order to play off of the modern, rustic feel of the table and chairs, we chose accessories that either felt equally earthy or starkly contrasted it. The Illumine 8-Light Pendant has a very contemporary, almost industrial feel to it, which offers a nice balance to the wooden furnishings.
In a modern room, you can’t go wrong with a soft, creamy white. Whites provide the perfect backdrop for colorful art, and they always bring a freshness and sometimes even a slightly industrial look with them. We chose Glidden’s Natural Wicker (GLDN 11).
If you’re giving your dining room an update, ignore any instinct that tells you everything has to “match.” While this can be a great strategy for creating a look, another way to create balance is to incorporate a few items for juxtaposition. Take, for example, the Celeste Dinnerware from Crate and Barrel, which we chose for its modern styling. The matte black finish is very cool and contemporary, which creates balance when placed on a dark-stained table. For the same reason, we chose the Metallic Diamond Printed Napkin Set in slate, which has a slightly tribal pattern in a black and silver color palette. But again, even these items need balance, so we also picked the Sushi Queen Flatware set, which boasts a faux wood resin design.
No room is complete without art. As soon as we saw the Ocean Front Collection from Home Decorators Collection, we knew it would be the perfect accent for this modern dining room. Adding an abstract piece of art to a more modern-styled dining room almost always works, no matter the color of the piece.
To bring a bit of holiday cheer into this space, we peppered in a few Christmas-y items, like the Driftwood Wreath, a perfect complement to a space that features so many beautiful wooden elements, and a fresh swag of garland to drape over the tabletop. Finished off with a couple of lanterns (The Bungalow Lantern from Anthropologie), you have the perfect centerpiece for this sleek space.
