It’s great having a dedicated space in my home for my creative studio. It allows me to keep my creative life such as my photography, design and my graphic work all centralized and organized. Having a place to let you explore your creative side lets you enjoy a sanctuary that’s all your own.
For me, I’ve taken over an extra bedroom although it can be your basement, garage, an extra bedroom, a den or any space that you aren’t utilizing to its full potential.

Plan your space
Planning your craft room or workshop is critical to maximize the benefits of the space for you. You want to make sure you’ll be comfortable working in the space, which means you want to take into account the following items:
- Measure your space (and the furniture you want to put into the space)
- Draw out your space on graph paper to scale if you can, this will help you figure out if your current or new furniture will fit into the space
- Use painter’s tape to map out where your furniture and storage units will be placed in the room (this will help you make sure that you have plenty of room for your chair, workspace, walk space and doors to open)
- Mark on your drawing and with painters tape any electrical outlets or vents (you don’t want to block any vents with large furniture or make your outlets difficult to utilize)
Also, be sure to take into consideration the lighting of your space. You will need ample overhead lighting and task lighting depending on what your activity will be.
All-in-all, you really want to plan your space to be comfortable and functional to what you will be using it for.
