Outdoor Decorating with Color: A beautiful covered patio with an outdoor sectional, coffee table and painted floor

In our Patio Style Challenge series, we ask some of our favorite bloggers from around the web to surprise us with their ideas for creating a stylish and functional space using Home Depot products as a starting point.

Kristin Jackson brought all her experience as an interior designer to bear in her outdoor decorating challenge. She came up with a spectacular deck makeover that features a beautiful painted floor, a DIY cinder block planter and other unexpected design touches. Read on as Kristin tells us how brought color, pattern, and function to her outdoor living room.

Living in the South we can generally enjoy the outdoors for at least three out of the four seasons, and even in the winter we have been known to pull out the heater and spend time on our deck. Our favorite thing to do outside is entertain. The men are usually around the grill, the kids are running in the yard, and the ladies are generally chatting it up in the corner in some old worn out wooden chairs that have been painted no fewer than eight times…  not so glamorous.

Well now, we can all relax and enjoy our deck with room to spare thanks to a few upgrades and our latest addition. Let me introduce the Hampton Bay Beverly Sectional. Love!

When given the chance to select our new seating from The Home Depot, I  jumped at the chance to own this beauty. Due to the size of our deck, we needed a sectional that could wrap the end of the space while still seating at least four comfortably. We did decide to add the additional chair to make it that much more inviting.

One of my favorite parts about the sectional is the hand woven resin wicker. The tones and shades within each strand vary throughout the day as the light changes and really give a great depth to this seating group.

The weather resistant cushions are great too. While we try to bring them in if we know rain is on the way,  we have been surprised by a few showers, and they have held up wonderfully. They have also survived a few spills thanks to the toddler.

I try to look at an outdoor space as an extension of the home. If you make it an inviting space, guests and family members alike will naturally gravitate there. One of my favorite things to do when creating a space is to incorporate colors and patterns. And what better way to do this than with pillows?!?

I chose vibrant pinks, reds and oranges to brighten our space, along with touches of black and whites which are always my go to. The neutral beige upholstery of the sectional allows for versatility when decorating. It can literally be paired with any color scheme.

It wouldn’t be a seating area without a coffee table. The one included in the set is made of the same woven resin with the addition of a glass top, which again, makes for easy clean up.

Taking the flooring into consideration, we decided to go the non traditional route. Rather than a typical outdoor rug that will mildew over time, I created stencils and added a large scaled painted pattern over our entire stained deck. I love the idea of these wearing individually overtime giving each one their own unique appearance.

When working with a small. multi-functional space I am a fan of items that play double duty. That is why we created a planter/bar last year using cinder blocks and scrap wood.

Adding a mirror and a DIY vintage inspired ampersand really makes this a great backdrop for cocktails or a buffet. Plus the letter provides a great ambient light in the evening.

Our biggest project in the deck overhaul has been on the to do list for a few years now. We finally built a pergola onto our existing deck and couldn’t be happier with the results. It feels like we have our own little retreat right off of the back of the house. By incorporating a vintage lantern in a vibrant new hue, this space has completely been made over.

Now we feel like our DIY Live Edge Table fits in with the rest of the space.

Other projects seen in this post:

Gold Leaf Terracotta Pots

DIY Lacquered Tray

If you need us at all in the next few months, you can probably find us out on the deck with a frosty and fruity beverage in hand.

To create her outdoor space, Kristin used the Hampton Bay Beverly Sectional in Beige.

Style Challenge is a series of posts from guest contributors who aim to bring you fresh inspiration and ideas for your home and garden using a single Home Depot product as a starting point. Kristin received the Hampton Bay Beverly Sectional from The Home Depot and a gift card, but The Home Depot provided no other compensation. The opinions and ideas Kristin expressed are her own.

Perfection!!!!!! Couple questions what is your deck color? An also the pergola color? We just build one also an loooove it!!!

    • Thanks Angie! It was a Cabot Semi Solid Stain in Cordovan Brown. It is the same color on both… the deck was just older wood & had been stained a few times where as the pergola was new wood it came out a little lighter. Best of luck! -Kristin

The floor is lovely (what is the wood species? And do you remember the stain name?)… such a great grounding surface for all the color and life.

I’d love to see some night-time shots on your website some day, as I bet you use the space a lot after the sun goes down.

    • A little of both Jackie :) A mix of Etsy, Target & leftover fabrics from older projects. I’ll be doing a post on my blog breaking down the sources of some of the items very soon.

      Thanks! Kristin
