This event ended on November 14, 2010. There are some stores that may still have coupons available, check with your local store.
FINAL WEEKEND Trade-In Your Old Christmas Lights and Save:
From Thursday, Nov. 4, through Sunday, Nov.14, all U.S. Home Depot stores will accept incandescent holiday light strings for safe recycling. Our zero-landfill recycling promise guarantees that every piece of your old incandescent Christmas lights are reused.
If you bring your old holiday lights for recycling will receive a $3 off coupon toward the purchase of any of our Energy Star LED holiday lights — even our two new brands, Martha Stewart Living and EcoSmart. We do have a limit five per customer and this program is only available in store.

Check out more Christmas and Holiday decor online!

I’m exasperated. Have recyled last year amd then found a few more ols string- saved them all year and now have missed out. HD”s timing is useless.
We’re sorry about your frustration. In the past we’ve used the Christmas light recycling program to kick off the Christmas light buying season. The program certainly seems to be popular, and you’re not the only one who’s said the program would be better if it were expanded. We sincerely appreciate your feedback.
Just found out about HD recycling the lights..is this something you do every year? I don’t even care about a coupon for new lights. If you do this every year..I will save all my old lights and email myself a reminder for next year. Guess I’ll do that anyway and send myself a reminder to check to see if HD will be doing it in 2012!
We’ve done the light recycling program for a couple of years now. No official decisions have been made about doing it in 2012– we’re still getting 2011 Christmas taken care of– but it’s very likely to happen again. Start looking for the light recycling program in November.
I’ve saved my old lights for 3 years in a row and every year I miss this sale! I’ve got about 100 sets of lights that are now going in the trash to fill up the local landfill! Thanks for not having a customer friendly process Home Depot!
We’re sorry you missed the recycling program. It’s obviously been quite popular. It sounds like your recommendation is that we make the program longer each year. Thanks for the feedback on that.
I missed the recycle deadline
Are any stores still participating in IL?
I just got out my old lights only to find the offer ended yesterday
I wish Hope depot would extend the offer longer… hint hint
We hear your hint. Thanks for the feedback.
I just came here to find out info on recycling my lights as well! I understand the discount being an Early Bird thing, but why not have a bin for old lights all year? Even if you only got a .50 or 1.00 coupon per visit, Im sure that would encourage more folks to do it! Every little bit helps right?! Im sure poor Darren is tired of fending off the same comments day after day, and his management has given him the same lame answer about company policy, etc.(been there) But maybe there’s someone you could go to at a higher corporate level, print out all of these comments, look up others online, and present it in a way showing how it would mean drawing more customers IN to the stores, where they will be more likely to spend $$$…because in the end, thats what will matter to HD decision makers. But seems like this is an easy win win for all.
Hey Kaci! Thanks for stopping by today! Great comments. I did want to let you and everyone know that we are working on plans for expanding all of our recycling opportunities, not just Christmas lights. With Christmas lights recycling, it’s a very large process and there are very few facilities (less than 5 in the US) that meet our standards of zero-landfill recycling. For us here at Home Depot, this issue really isn’t about the money, it about doing it right. We have over 2200 stores across the country so bringing all of those broken and well-used lights to only a handful of facilities to be recycled creates an additional environmental impact. Doing it locally would be much more impactful. Good solutions often take time, so rest assured we are looking at all of these comments, taking them to heart and working on ways to solve these environmental problems.
BTW, I could never get tired of hearing from you and everyone else! You and everyone here are helping us make Home Depot better!
I agree….I wish that HD would recycle christmas lights all year….or atleast thru January…..It is silly to have the trade-in event many weeks prior to people even think about breaking out the x-mas decor. I don’t know of anyone who goes thru x-mas decor in Oct. This should be done in JAN/FEB without a coupon/savings just a place to drop off broken lights that won’t clog up landfills.
Hope Depot should become the pioneer in accepting Christmas lights for recycling year-round. Come on HD, step up!
Home Depot should accept Christmas lights at all times for recycling. You make a lot of money selling lights that only last a year or so. As part of the community, you should be recycling year round; even if you don’t give any coupons or rebates the rest of the year, it is the responsible thing to do.
I would have loved to recycle my light but we weren’t even thinking of them in early November….I’d love to be able to recycle them still now that Christmas is over. Wish this program would have run longer. Perhaps next year you can offer this without the coupon after the end date.
Hello Darren,
Can you let me know if there is a Home Depot in my area that will still except holiday lights? I do not need a coupon in return, but would just like to recycle the lights.
zip code: 97202
Thank you!
Katie
Katie, I’m sorry, we don’t have any stores that are still taking the lights. We are currently looking at ways to improve and expand the Christmas Lights Recycling program for next year. In the meantime, you can visit http://www.earth911.com, they have four locations listed that may be able to help.
that sucks. i thought this would still be going on. so much for wanting to go to home depot.
Glad I checked the website. Was about to head to Depot to exchange some lights, pick up a bunch of extension chords other electrical supplies. I guess a closer competitor will get that business. Seriously, what is with ending a promotion on a seasonal item, before the season even begins – rediculous.
That’s ridiculous, this deal shouldn’t begin until the beginning of December when everyone is actually taking down their decorations and going through them! Besides the fact that it is only $3.00 off very expensive lights, it makes no sense to start and end this discount at such a very early time. Even with $3.00 off it’s still cheaper to buy them at Target when they’re NOT on sale.
So I missed this as well – didn’t even think about Christmas until after Thanksgiving. Walked in today at my Home Depot and totally struck out. Not only were the lights refused, I missed out on all the awesome black Friday events (my bad)! But hey, it would be awesome if thre was still a recycling program even without coupons. What do you say to that?
Is the offer still on ?
Sorry Laura, the trade-in event ended on November 14, 2010. You can see if your local stores is one of the very few that have coupons left, but most all of the coupons are now gone.
Add me to the list of aggravated people that missed it because it was both too short and too early. Christmas themes should not happen until after Thanksgiving. This year we were seeing stores put away Halloween items while setting up Christmas displays and Halloween was still a week away!!! That’s just wrong.
Thanks for your feedback Eric!
I don’t care about the coupon. Will you take old lights for recycling?
Hey Doug! I don’t see why not, however I am looking into further to make sure I send you to the right store. What is your favorite Home Depot so I can get you better details?
I visited my local Home Depot today (Fri 11/19/10) to check on the dates for the 3.00 rebate, and I was told I had until the 29th to bring in my old lights and get 5 new sets at 3.00 off per set.
What gives…when does the promo end?
Thanks for your prompt reply.
Gary B
Thanks for visiting Gary! The official end for recycling your Christmas lights ended on November 14, 2010. However, there are some stores out there that still have coupons, although there aren’t many left. You can always check with your local store to see if they still have coupons and if they will honor the program, but please know that if they are out of coupons it is because the event has officially passed.
WHAT?!?!? I missed it again, even though I put it on my calendar for this year for the week it was last year. So I know you moved it up, because I wanted to make sure I didn’t miss it. I marked it a whole year in advance so I wouldn’t miss it. We don’t even think about decorating until after Thanksgiving, which is why I missed it last year. But this is totally unfair to move it earlier and earlier every year–almost as if you want to look good, without ACTUALLY have to hand out any coupons.
Hey Jennifer, sorry you missed the 10 day event. We actually added a few more days this year than last year! May I email you with some information?
Missed it again!! This event really should last a little longer. I’ll have to try again next year..
I planned on having my husband exchange our Christmas lights this week since he’s off. Good thing I checked your website. WOW! I would have missed this event. I think it would be great if you could extend it longer or maybe do it twice to give us all time to get our lights out of storage. What a great idea to encourage everyone to recycle & use more energy efficient lights. Way to Go Home Depot!!
I agree with Pati too. In years past I’ve always missed this event because it happens so early. This morning I just decided to look it up online to see when it is so I don’t miss it again…good thing I did! Gotta go raid the attic!
I’m with Pati. I will have to tear my storage apart to get to the bulbs this weekend, but I’ll do it. Would have been much better to take place at least through Thanksgiving weekend, when many more people get out their decorating goodies. LED is MUCH better than the old bulbs. Lasts longer, takes much less electricity, and is giving off more glow than in years past.
[...] Sunday, November 14 at The Home Depot when you trade-in your old or broken Christmas Lights for a $3 off any Energy Efficient LED lights coupon (coupon only available in-store, up to 5 coupons per customer). Remember you can trade-in up to 5 [...]
I think that you should have this rebait much long then just 10 days. You could have one at the begining of the month of Nov, and one at the end of Nov. From the 20th to the 30th in Nov. Just a suggestion.
Thanks for the feedback Pati! I will be sure to share it along to our leadership!
