The bedroom is known as the sanctuary of the home, a place where you go to relax, unwind and recharge. In these busy times especially, your bedroom should serve as your own private escape from the world, a place that’s serene and calming. As warmer weather approaches, taking the time to give your bedroom a thorough cleaning will not only reinvigorate the room itself but will also provide you with a fresh outlook for spring.
Following this simple checklist will help you get your bedroom in order quickly and easily:
Wash bedding, comforters, mattress pads and pillows. Strip all of the sheets and pillowcases for washing and have your comforter professionally cleaned. Launder the mattress pad and flip your mattress so it doesn’t wear unevenly. Don’t forget to clean underneath the bed…clearing out the underbed area creates additional space for items than need to be stored away, such shoes and heavy winter clothes.
Clean flooring. Dust and mop hard floors (including baseboards) and/or vacuum all carpet including underneath furniture and inside the closet. Make sure to spot treat carpet areas if necessary.
Clean windows and have your curtains professionally cleaned. Dust windowsills and wash the inside and outside of windows. If your window screens have seen better days, remove and hose them down before replacing. Dust blinds and window treatments and take down your curtains to have them professionally cleaned.
Dust furniture and lamps. Dust and polish furniture (using a special cleaner for wood pieces), vacuum lampshades and clean mirrors. Don’t forget to dust the ceiling corners, where cobwebs tend to congregate.
Clean the ceiling fan. Dust and/or wipe down fan blades with a soft cloth. If there is a light fixture attached to the fan, remove it for cleaning and reinsert.
Clean out your closet. Last but certainly not least, now is the time to change out your heavy winter clothes, boots and outerwear for lightweight spring clothing. Cleaning out the closet can be a time-consuming endeavor so you may want to consider devoting a solid half-day to this task after you’ve finished the rest of the bedroom cleaning. Sort through all clothing and set aside any pieces you no longer want to donate to charity. A general closet-cleaning guideline to follow is that if you haven’t worn it in at least a year, it’s time to get rid of it.
Cleaning your bedroom can get you into the spring-cleaning spirit and prepare you to tackle the rest of your home. Use the tips above and your bedroom will be ready for spring before you know it!
