DIY Valentine’s Gifts for Your Sweetheart: #14 Making a Last Minute Idea Magic

Posted by: on February 14th, 2012 | Make A Comment

Day 14 of 14: DIY Valentine’s Gifts for your Sweetheart finds our writers discussing great Home Depot products or projects for gift ideas. In this edition, Craig has a last minute gift idea, and Shaina tells us the magic words that will make this idea really cast a spell.

Give kisses, hugs and do-it-yourself on Valentine's Day

Craig: OK, it’s almost too late. It’s Valentine’s Day, and any guy who hasn’t figured out what to get his sweetheart had better get his act together, fast. Fortunately, Home Depot is there for you with what just happens to be the perfect DIY Valentine’s gift of all—a Home Depot gift card. It’s fast, it’s easy and you can even get a card with an image perfect for Valentine’s Day.

There. Problem solved. Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone!

Shaina: Hold on. You’re not done yet. For one thing, the woman will clearly recognize a last second attempt to stay out of trouble, so we’re off to a very bad start. But worse, you’re still missing the romance. Any fellow in this situation will have to step up his game. He’ll at least need to present the card with some flowers—which, by the way, you can also pick up at The Home Depot—and a card with a very important inscription.

I know exactly what to say that will keep the last minute guy out of the doghouse, and firmly plant him in his lover’s heart.

DIY Valentine’s Gifts for Your Sweetheart: #13 Fire Up Your Love Life

Posted by: on February 13th, 2012 | One Comment

Day 13 of 14: DIY Valentine’s Gifts for your Sweetheart finds our writers discussing great Home Depot products or projects for gift ideas. In today’s edition, despite his reputation as a wet blanket, Jae shows Caroline that he’s actually quite warmhearted. Or is he just blowing smoke?

Firepot Valentine's Day Idea

Jae:  Here’s a really hot idea for Valentine’s Day, something that’ll really light a fire in the heart of any lover.

Caroline: A “hot” idea that will “light a fire”? I get it. You’re suggesting snuggling up in front of a roaring fire. That would certainly be very romantic, but not everyone has a fireplace. This DIY Valentine’s gift idea seems a little limited.

Jae: You’re on the right track, Caroline. But this is a way to set up a romantic evening for two at home in front of the fire—even if you don’t have a fireplace. I found this awesome product at The Home Depot called a Firepot.

DIY Valentine’s Gifts for Your Sweetheart: #12 Make it Red

Posted by: on February 12th, 2012 | Make A Comment

Day 12 of 14: DIY Valentine’s Gifts for your Sweetheart finds our writers discussing great Home Depot products or projects for gift ideas. In today’s edition, Ayana explains that it’s the color that counts, and Thomas gives us the scoop on what’s red at The Home Depot.

Red is definitely on display at The Home Depot this Valentine's Day

Ayana: Red is definitely the Valentine’s Day color. That means that, as long as it’s red, just about anything can make a good DIY Valentine’s gift.

Thomas: You can find many DIY items on homedepot.com that are available in red. Take for example the Milwaukee’s 18V Red Lithium Ion Compact Drill. It comes with a dual red lithium-ion batteries, charger, drill and carrying case. You can have your Valentine do LOTS of projects around the house with this as a gift.

Ayana: That sounds like a good gift, but I don’t know how he’d feel about the honey-do list that would come with it. He’s been asking me to add some color to the house. I thought painting his office would be a nice surprise. Maybe a grayish blue with a red accent wall. He’d love that.

Thomas: That is a great idea! I found Behr Premium Plus Blue Willow, an interior flat paint with a gray-blue tint that would be perfect. Pair it with Glidden’s Red Geranium, a brighter/darker shade of red that would liven up any office for sure!

Ayana: And if you want to go all out, get your DIY sweetheart those Milwaukee brand tools and add the DeLonghi Nescafe Dolce Gusto Creativa Single Serve Coffemaker in red. Who doesn’t love sipping on gourmet coffee throughout the day. It would complement the office decor perfectly.

Editor’s Note: If men are from Mars, and women are from Venus, how can you choose the best Valentine’s Gift for someone on the other planet? Our DIY Valentine’s Gifts series highlights 14 great Home Depot gift ideas for your sweetie.

DIY Valentine’s Gifts for Your Sweetheart: #11 Make Love Last With a Live Plant

Posted by: on February 11th, 2012 | Make A Comment

Day 9 of 14: DIY Valentine’s Gifts for your Sweetheart finds our writers discussing great Home Depot products or projects for gift ideas. In today’s edition, Shaina tells Craig how to make love last, even when the chocolates have all been eaten.

Give a live plant for Valentine's Day-- a Purple Phal Orchid, perhaps

Craig: I know it’s traditional for a guy to his girl a big bouquet of flowers for Valentine’s Day, but I always thought that was kind of a waste. After a couple of days, the flowers are all dead. It’s like there’s a big, splashy display, but it all fades away so fast. Why spend money on stuff that doesn’t last?

Shaina: Gee, Craig, how romantic. Never, ever underestimate the power of a big, splashy display, especially on Valentine’s Day. And, seriously, this isn’t an economic transaction. It’s LOVE.

I hear you, though. Girls love receiving flowers, but it is a little sad when it’s finally time to toss the flowers into the compost bin. Or when all the chocolates are eaten. That’s really sad.

DIY Valentine’s Gifts for Your Sweetheart: #10 Romance is a Money Saver

Posted by: on February 10th, 2012 | Make A Comment

Day 10 of 14: DIY Valentine’s Gifts for your Sweetheart finds our writers discussing great Home Depot products or projects for gift ideas. In today’s edition, despite the dim light, Ayana sees romance, and Thomas sees savings.

Dimmed lights and roses for a romantic dinner

Dimmed lights set a romantic mood

Thomas:  One DIY Valentine’s gift idea I had was to install a programmable thermostat and also some dimmers in the dining room, bathroom, kitchen and bedroom.

This isn’t really a traditional Valentine’s gift, but these projects will help save money, which you might put towards a romantic vacation later in the year.

Ayana:  You’ve made really good points about lighting efficiency and saving money, and who doesn’t love a vacation with their sweetie? But you don’t have to convince me of the connection between dimmers and Valentine’s Day. Ever hear of mood lighting? It’s one of the most important ingredients in a romantic Valentine’s Day evening.

Day 9 of 14: DIY Valentine’s Gifts for your Sweetheart finds our writers discussing great Home Depot products or projects for gift ideas. In today’s edition, Caroline shows Jae how to bake cookies that worth carving his initials into.

Jae:  What do women really want for Valentine’s Day, besides the usual box of chocolates and red roses? Caroline, you’re a girl—help us out.

Caroline: ‘You’re a girl?’ Wow, you’re so astute, Jae!

I don’t think that Valentine’s Day gifts need to be something grand or over-the-top, though I’m sure none of us would turn down a luxe gift like roses or chocolates, but I think the important thing is to remind your Valentine that you were thinking about them on this day of love. I think sweets are really a wonderful Valentine’s Day gift, not only because of the lover nicknames like ‘sweetheart’ and ‘sweetie’ but because they feel indulgent. Plus, they say ‘you look hot and I love you even though you just shoveled two dozen chocolate truffles into your mouth.’

Jae: It will take a while to erase that mental image from my brain. But anyway, how do I give my sweetheart a sugary gift without it looking like I ran to the pharmacy last minute and grabbed the first red heart box I found?

DIY Valentine’s Gifts for Your Sweetheart: #8 Tools Can be Romantic, Too

Posted by: on February 8th, 2012 | Make A Comment

Day 8 of 14: DIY Valentine’s Gifts for your Sweetheart finds our writers discussing great Home Depot products or projects for gift ideas. In today’s edition, Shaina tells Craig how to make do-it-yourself project romantic, especially for the woman who wields tools.

This can be a romantic Valentine gift. Really.

Craig:  Valentine’s Day is all about romance and chocolates and flowers, of course. But there’s no reason it can’t be a day for practicality, too. I’d like to suggest to the guys that a tool kit could be a terrific gift for Valentine’s Day. I say give your squeeze a tool bag.

Shaina:  A tool bag?! That’s not very romantic. Any guy who resorts to that is likely to be spending the night in the garage on Valentine’s Day night. What will you propose next?–a new motor for your bass boat?

DIY Valentine’s Gifts for Your Sweetheart: #7 Window Screen Earring Holder

Posted by: on February 7th, 2012 | 4 Comments

Day 7 of 14: DIY Valentine’s Gifts for your Sweetheart finds our writers discussing great Home Depot products or projects for gift ideas. In today’s edition, Ayana reminds Thomas that do-it-yourself gifts are extra thoughtful, but shiny stuff is good, too.

How to make an earring holder with window screen and a picture frame

Thomas:  A lot of guys are tired of getting their wives and girlfriends the same type Valentine’s Day gifts every year. The same old dozen roses, boxes of candy and teddy bears just seem boring. And what if a fellow gave his sweetie a necklace and earrings for Christmas? More jewelry just seems unimaginative.

Ayana:  There’s nothing at all wrong with a dozen roses and some candy or a teddy bear. Trust me, we love that kind of thing. And don’t EVER hesitate to give your girl something shiny. But I understand what you’re saying, and anyone in that situation is definitely due for a Valentine’s gift makeover. All it takes is a bit of do-it-yourself creativity.

Thomas:  DIY is good, but don’t assume that all guys are real handy with tools. I hope whatever you have in mind isn’t too complex.

Ayana:  Don’t worry. When it comes to DIY Valentine’s gifts, this is pretty easy.

DIY Valentine’s Gifts for Your Sweetie: #6 Pizza on a Floor Tile

Quarry tiles used as a pizza stone

Day 6 of 14: DIY Valentine’s Gifts for your Sweetheart finds our writers discussing great Home Depot products or projects for gift ideas. In today’s edition, Caroline shows Jae how cooking on a floor tile can impress your sweetie.

Jae: I don’t know what all the fuss is about Valentine’s Day gifts. I say go old school. I say give a little box of those heart-shaped Valentines candies, like the ones you used to get in grade school with the “Be My Valentine” messages on them.  You know – cute and kitschy.

Caroline: You’re joking right?  Good luck with that.

Jae: Isn’t everyone always saying, “It’s the thought that counts … yadda, yadda”.

Caroline: That is a very important sentiment, but the message you’d be sending with that particular “thought” is, “I completely forgot Valentine’s Day so I got you this candy on my way home from work.”

A much more thoughtful gift would be a homemade dinner with your special someone.

Something easy would be a homemade pizza. Even you could do it, Jae. Think of cooking a pizza as a DIY Valentine’s gift.

DIY Valentine’s Gift for Your Sweetie: #5 Industrial Chain Necklace

Day 5 of 14: DIY Valentine’s Gifts for your Sweetheart finds our writers discussing great Home Depot products or projects for gift ideas. In today’s edition, Shaina convinces Craig that even a nuts and bolts kind of guy can appreciate a handmade necklace.

Shaina:  A pretty necklace is a great gift for a woman on Valentine’s Day. But I have an idea for a fun DIY necklace for a guy.

Craig: A necklace for a guy might work. But not all men are so into jewelry. What about the nuts and bolts kind of guys? You know…the fellows who spend their time tinkering their bikes and building stuff. Don’t you think maybe a power drill or a socket set would be more their thing? For a lot of guys, just a six-pack of his favorite beer would satisfy him.
