Bright and Cheery Christmas Decorating, With a Bit of Whimsy

Christmas decorating doesn’t often include yellow and turquoise, but Kelli Mullins and her sister Kristi Jansen make it look as natural as homemade eggnog. Together, they produce the DIY and decor blog Lolly Jane, where you’ll see their sunny take on decor on display.

Kelli and Kristi styled this Christmas living room for our Holiday Style Challenge series. We sent them an assortment of Home Depot Christmas decorations and let Kelli and Kristi use them to create a holiday decor in their unique style.

Kelli shows us how they DIYed the Home Depot items to fit their holiday vision, which is slightly rustic, bursting with charm and full of whimsical detail.

Christmas is, of course, all about the cheer that is spread this time of year but for us, it’s also about being cheery. We have avoided the red and green color scheme for several years now and instead sported pops of red, turquoise and mustard/gold. It’s not very traditional, but we love how bright it is!

Christmas Decorating, Outdoors or In: A Holiday Hot Cocoa Stand

Christmas Decorating, Outdoors or In: A Holiday Hot Cocoa Stand

She states it right there in the About section of her blog, Sugar and Charm: Eden Passante has a passion for sweet recipes. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that she managed to get sweets into her Holiday Style Challenge.

Just to explain, our Holiday Style Challenge series involves sending mystery boxes of Home Depot Christmas decorations to some of our favorite design and lifestyle bloggers. We then get out of the way as the bloggers create fun and creative holiday decor in their own unique ways.

Eden had the brilliant idea of setting up a hot cocoa stand in her front yard, all decked out for Christmas. Her Christmas decorating ideas would work for a fun outdoor cocoa party, weather permitting. Judging from the photos, it must have been a chilly day when Eden set up her cocoa stand. And if it’s too cold for an outdoor holiday party where you live, these ideas will work equally well indoors.

Speaking of the apparently chilly day for Eden’s cocoa stand… let’s just say that looks can be deceiving, as you’ll discover.

My challenge was to style an outdoor area, so my passion for entertaining and undeniable sweet-tooth lead to creating the perfect and easy holiday hot cocoa stand. We live in a neighborhood where, during the summer months, there’s a lemonade stand on every corner, but I’ve yet to see a hot cocoa stand!

My goal was to design something effortless and charming that would make people want to stop for a little Christmas in a cup.

Fresh Christmas Decorating Ideas: Holiday Vignettes

There’s no knocking the Everything Shiny and Sparkly school of thought when it comes to holiday decor, but minimal Christmas decorating can be just as effective when done right. Interior designer Jana Bek knows about understated decorating. Her Christmas decorating ideas keep things simple and easy to manage.

She writes about design and decor on her blog Jana Bek Design, and she’s among the talented bloggers taking part in our Holiday Style Challenge series. It goes like this: we sent the style bloggers mystery boxes of Home Depot Christmas decorations, and let the bloggers use them to create fresh new takes on holiday decor.

One big takeaway from Jana’s Style Challenge is to decorate in what she calls “vignettes”, as she explains…

I love transitioning our home for the holidays and I’m excited to share my approach to decorating with you!

Lately in terms of décor and design I’ve been inspired by cleaner décor – a less is more mentality. So when I received my Home Depot Challenge boxes I took my time considering how I would use these pieces to create fresh and minimal holiday vignettes throughout our home.

A Coastal Rustic Christmas with an Oyster Roast

In the warmer parts of the country, it’s not crazy to think about celebrating the holiday season outdoors. In South Carolina that could include holding an oyster roast. That’s what Krystine Edwards did, and she created a special rustic Christmas look for her party.

Krystine writes about decorating and home remodeling on her blog Living Pretty Styled. She set up her rustic Christmas oyster roast as part of our Holiday Style Challenge series here on The Home Depot Blog. We sent her a mystery box of Home Depot Christmas decorations and let her work her decorating magic.

Read on for inspiration and ideas for your own rustic Christmas look.

Here in Charleston the weather around the holidays is unpredictable, one day you can be freezing and the next you’re at the beach. For the most part it stays fairly warm up through Christmas. We spend as much time as we can outdoors and most importantly in our backyard. We are lucky to live on over a half of an acre, so there’s plenty of room to have all friends over for weekend family fun. So, when The Home Depot asked me to participate in the Holiday Style Challenge and to use some outdoor Christmas decorations, I was over the moon!

Holiday Mantel Ideas: Black, White and Gold with Lots of Personality

When it comes to decorating with lots of personality, Allison of Two Thirty~Five Designs pretty much has it down. She has a knack for being unconventional, but still down to earth with her styling.

That’s why we’re loving the holiday mantel ideas she’s offering as part of our Holiday Style Challenge series here on The Home Depot Blog. For the Style Challenge, we send some of our favorite design and decor bloggers mystery boxes of Home Depot Christmas decorations and let them work their decorating magic.

Allison pulled together an eclectic mix of elements, including an estate sale find and a piece of cool DIY wall art to create her fun and festive fireplace mantel in her unique way.

Last Christmas was our first in this house, and I kept the mantel really low key and simple by using all white with just a bit gold. I really loved the clean lines of it all, but wanted to add more texture to it this year. And I was giddy with the patterns that I found at The Home Depot!

Christmas Decorating Ideas for A Cozy Winter Patio

Christmas Decorating Ideas for A Cozy Winter Patio

Emily Clark always has distinctive Christmas decorating ideas. We were so impressed with her woodland-inspired Christmas theme that she showed us previously here on the Home Depot Blog. She’s the author of Emily A. Clark: design. simplified., and she’s back with more creative ideas for Christmas decorating. This time she moves outdoors to create a cozy winter patio for the holidays. Of course, not everyone lives where sitting on the patio is much of an option in December. But take a look and you’ll see these decorating ideas are easily at home, too, indoors.

This is Emily’s second contribution to our Holiday Style Challenge series, a Christmas tradition here. We pack up mystery boxes of Home Depot holiday decorations to send to some of our favorite stylists and designers, and then leave the rest to them.

Read on to see Emily’s very clever modifications to some of the decorations we sent her to give her Christmas decor her own unique look.

Here in the Carolinas, the winter months are fairly mild well into December. And, truthfully, I’m always a little sad when we “close” our patio late in the fall. So, for the Holiday Style Challenge, I dreamed up a cozy Christmas outdoor space where we could light candles, snuggle under blankets and sip hot chocolate.

Christmas Decorating Ideas for A Cozy Winter Patio

First, I decided on a color scheme. Although we don’t have a lot of it in our house, I don’t think you can beat traditional red for outdoor Christmas decorating. I started by choosing a (non-traditional) red, white and black fabric for new pillows and bought several cans of Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch spray paint in gloss apple red.

Christmas Decor with a Nod to Nature, Glitter and the Unexpected

Christmas Decor with a Nod to Nature, Glitter and the Unexpected

Christmas decor with natural elements is a trend we love. Evergreen sprigs provide Mother Nature’s balance to the shiny and glittery aspects to holiday decorating. Nya of Freckles Chick demonstrates this so beautifully with her holiday living room decor.

It’s part of our Holiday Style Challenge series, in which we send mystery boxes of Home Depot Christmas decorations to exceptional style and decor bloggers to see what terrific holiday decorating ideas they can generate.

Nya has so many great ideas here for creating a unique look for Christmas, including some clever modifications of the decorations we sent her. Read on for inspiration for your own holiday decorating.

There are so many reasons to love every season, but the Christmas/holiday season gets 110% of my attention around here! To me, there are few things more heartwarming than cozying up with family, twinkling lights, warm mugs, and stories that embody the essence of the holidays. There’s something truly magical about peeking outside to see the blanket of fresh snow, moonlight sparkling off of it, awaiting those first boot prints to crunch through come morning. Even with the hustle and bustle, it’s an enchanting time. We’re especially excited this year as we have a spunky toddler in our midst!

So I was thrilled to have an excuse to usher in the holidays a bit earlier this year, thanks to The Home Depot Holiday Style Challenge. For our tree, I thought I’d stay true to our home’s aesthetic: neutral tones with a nod to nature, glitter, shine, and the unexpected.

Christmas Decor with a Nod to Nature, Glitter and the Unexpected

I flock to shiny, glittery things. My husband however, is forever reeling me in to ensure that our home isn’t one blinding, reflective abode that can be seen from space. Thanks to his, ahem “helpful feedback”, I’m mindful of tempering all that glitters with rustic notes. It’s a compromise that I’ve embraced, and I had the best time incorporating this look into our tree.

Gold and Glam (But Not Too Stuffy) Christmas Decor

Jen Woodhouse doesn’t do stuffy. She couldn’t even if she tried. All you have to do is read the first paragraph of her Christmas decor article below to see exactly what we mean. But she most certainly knows how to make a room look glamorous, but always in a comfortable, relaxed sort of a way.

She’s a super talented stylist and an accomplished DIYer. She writes about decor and more on her blog House of Wood, and she’s taking part in our ongoing Holiday Style Challenge series here on The Home Depot Blog. We sent Jen, and several other top drawer designers, mystery boxes of Home Depot Christmas decorations to see the great Christmas decorating ideas they’d generate.

Jen’s holiday decor is gorgeous, and brimming with warmth and personality… just like Jen herself.

OH.MAH.GOSH.YOU.GUYS. I am so excited to have been invited to participate in The Home Depot’s Holiday Style Challenge this year! And yes, this kind of excitement warrants ALL CAPS, all annoying like that. I can’t even tell you how honored, humbled, and completely intimidated I am to be included in this group of crazy talented bloggers. You guys. I almost peed my pants. I am not even kidding.

Gold and Glam (But Not Too Stuffy) Christmas Decor

When the Style Challenge mystery boxes showed up on my doorstep, it was literally like Christmas morning here at The House of Wood. Except it was 72 degrees out and October. No big deal. That didn’t stop me from tearing through the boxes like a kid on Christmas day.

I was thrilled to find that they were filled to the brim with magical goodies, mostly in a metallic gold palette. Shut the front door. Home Depot, have you been reading my diary? I have been crushing on all things gold and metallic lately, you’d think it was my job.

Dining Room Christmas Decorations in Teal, Red and Mint Green

Dining Room Christmas Decorations in Teal, Red and Mint Green

Christmas decorations often lean toward the warmer end of the color spectrum, which makes sense given the time of year. But cooler colors can work wonderfully during the holidays, too! Take a look at how designer Camila Pavone decked out her dining room for Christmas in teal and candy red with a bit of frosty mint green and champagne mixed in.

Camila is the author of the design blog Effortless Style, and she’s one of the very talented stylists taking part in our Holiday Style Challenge series here on The Home Depot Blog. We sent Camila and the other participants mystery boxes of Home Depot Christmas decorations. The bloggers then share with us their Christmas decorating ideas and tips using these holiday items.

Camila focused on her dining room, turning it into a bright and lively place for holiday entertaining. Read on for holiday inspiration and plenty of holiday decorating ideas you can use in your own home.

Christmas came early this year when boxes arrived from Home Depot with goodies to use for the latest Holiday Style Challenge. Excitement quickly turned to panic when I remembered that I’m not a big decorator for holidays. Decorate my house? No problem! Decorate with garland and lights? Big problem.

I love the holidays, but I never seem to have enough hours to do most of my to-do list in a day, so adding holiday decorations never seem to happen. This dry run though got me excited for the holidays, and I will make sure to make the time to add a little holiday sparkle to my house this season.

Unlike a lot of people, I actually use my formal dining room for dining. I have lots of family who live near by, and I enjoy hosting meals. So, my pick for holiday decorating was actually very easy for me. Dining room it is!

I have a very colorful house that doesn’t tend to work really well with the traditional red, green and gold color story of the holidays. I was happily surprised though that the color story this season looked like it was made for my home!
