Gardening Q&A: How do I keep my Christmas tree fresh?

A Home Depot associate helps a customer choose a real Christmas tree

Q: How do I help my Christmas tree last through the holiday season?

A: Home Depot associates get that question a lot around Christmastime. The important thing is to keep your real Christmas tree from drying out. That means, first of all, securing it in a stand with a basin, and watering the tree until it stops absorbing what you give it. A good rule of thumb is to look for a basin that can hold at least 1 quart of water for every inch of the trunk’s diameter.

On the first day in particular, your tree is likely to need a great deal of water, so keep an eye on the basin and refill as needed. After that, check the basin at least once a day and add fresh water any time the water level looks low.

An amazing outdoor Christmas display of a giant retro TV and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer characters

In our Style Challenge series, we ask some of our favorite bloggers from around the web to surprise us with their ideas for creating a stylish and functional space using Home Depot products as a starting point.

For the Holiday Edition of the Style Challenge, we sent a big box of Home Depot Christmas decorations to Ashley and Greg Brown of the blog 7th House on the Left. They came up with one of the most clever and amazing outdoor Christmas decorating ideas we’ve ever seen. Their attention to detail in this retro-TV Christmas yard art is impressive, and they explain how they did it, from start to finish. Ashley has the beginning of the story …

When the folks at The Home Depot asked us to be a part of the Holiday Style Challenge, I knew this was indeed going to be a challenge for an obsessive planner like me. It sounded like a fun challenge though, and it was the type of project we hadn’t tackled before, so we threw our hats in the ring! When we were assigned the front yard, we were really excited and anxious all at the same time. Last year, we were knee-deep in a huge kitchen renovation, and the year before, we were just moving in. This year is the first year we’ll have ever decorated the front yard for Christmas.

A beautiful Christmas mantel in turquoise, white and silver

In our Style Challenge series, we ask some of our favorite bloggers from around the web to surprise us with their ideas for creating a stylish and functional space using Home Depot products as a starting point.

When Kelly participated in our Patio Style Challenge this past spring, she wowed us with her colorful, casual outdoor living space. We knew she had to participate in our festive Holiday Edition, and we were thrilled when she accepted the challenge! Take a look at how she managed to mix and match various textures and finishes to create a gorgeous Christmas mantel.

When I start thinking about holiday decor, two things come to mind:  sparkle and a pop of color. I love to use unexpected color to add a modern twist to classic elements like a wreath and garland.

This year, I’m using a palette of turquoise, silver and white; pairing Martha Stewart Living ornaments with a collection of mercury glass bottles, vases and votive candles.

A Casual Tablesetting Idea for the Holidays and Beyond

Maybe it’s because red and green just does not ‘go’ with my living room color palette or maybe it’s because I like things that multitask, but in recent years, I’ve grown tired of the same old red-and-green color combination that appears all over the place this time of year. Don’t get me wrong, I love both of these colors, I love them together, and I do love them at Christmas, some years I just want to go in a different direction with my own Christmas decor. This happens to be one of those years.

While hurrying through the parking lot of Home Depot, I spotted some bright purple-and-green ornamental cabbages that were so exquisite! The colors were vibrant and the vigorous, blooming shape of the cabbage head was so interesting and sculptural. I immediately knew that these cabbages were destined for my holiday house.
