Inspiration board with different styles of table lamps

Lighting is hugely important when designing a room, both for function and style! Table lamps can create great focal points on a side table next to a sofa, paired on top of a console table, or proudly set atop nightstands. No matter what style or space you’re trying to create, there is a table lamp (or several!) to suit any situation. We decided to round up a few of our favorites:

WHITE CERAMIC LAMPS (LEFT TO RIGHT):

A simple white table lamp is a no-brainer for any space because it can blend with just about any design style. Whether you want a more traditional silhouette or something a bit funkier, you can’t go wrong with a lamp like this. The Filament Design Cathrine Table Lamp features a textured base that adds a bit of interest, while the Illumine Bronze Table Lamp has a quirky, round cut-out base that can create a focal point no matter where it is placed. The Illumine 1-Light Table Lamp with an Ivory Finish features a traditional shape in a crisp, clean color.

Inspiration board of Outdoor Lighting Ideas

When it comes to curb appeal, outdoor lighting is a great way to give your home’s façade a face lift. We love the way a lantern in an unusual shape or color can set your home apart from every other home on the block. We rounded up a few of our favorites.

TOP ROW: TRADITIONAL OUTDOOR LIGHTING

If you have a more traditional home, an outdoor light fixture with more traditional styling makes sense. But even if you go that route, consider a fixture with an oversize scale, or an usual color or patina.

The Acclaim Lighting Dover Collection is tall at 16 inches, and while it looks quite classic, two of these lanterns on both sides of a front door would make a dramatic statement.

The gray-green patina finish of the Progress Lighting Crawford Collection Golden Baroque Wall Lantern makes it the perfect complement to a traditional home with a more rustic style.

For a simple, understated option, the Hampton Bay Bronze Wall Lantern is a classic.

Home Improvement 101 explains the words and terms you’ll find in home improvement, decorating and DIY. We’re pinning these mini-tutorials on our Home Improvement 101 board on Pinterest. We’re also rounding up a few of them each week here on the Apron blog.

In this installment: light fixtures.

Semi-Flush Mount Light Fixtures

A semi-flush mount ceiling light falls between a flush mount fixture and a chandelier in style. Semi-flush mounts hang approximately 4 inches to 8 inches from the ceiling, giving the illusion of a chandelier where a low-hanging chandelier wouldn’t be possible. They are good for lighting fairly large areas with ambient light. This type of light fixture is well-suited for areas where you need basic functional lighting, but with a little bit of style — your entry hall, dining room or master bedroom.

Inspired: Dining Room Chandeliers

Chandelier options and inspiration for your dining room

For many people, the dining room is the most important entertaining space in the home. One of our favorite ways to update the dining room is to change out the light fixture. Whether you’re looking for shopping guidance or inspiration, this inspiration board walks you through the different types of dining room chandeliers.

BRANCHED CHANDELIERS

The traditional branched chandelier uses a series of arms to bear the electrical lighting of the chandelier. This shape typically creates a ring of branches around a central trunk, a bit like a tree with branches, to give off a soft and elegant light. Most commonly, a branched chandelier also has small shades around each light source that diffuses the light from the bulb, creating a subtle glow.

Inspired: The Estelle Light

Inspired: The Estelle Light

There aren’t a ton of options when it comes to flush mount lights. That’s not to say that the majority of the options aren’t lovely (they are), but sometimes it’s hard to find something a little bit different. But imagine our delight when we came across the lovely Estelle 3-Light Flush Mount fixture in homedepot.com’s virtual aisles. You can see it at the top of our inspiration board above. It’s charming, no? Plus, it looks incredibly luxe for just under $70! We love the combination of the champagne finish with the glass beads, which create an antique, romantic vibe.

After happening upon the Estelle light, we felt it was our duty to show you how you could use her in your home. We immediately imagined a series of Estelles guiding you down a long hallway, in all their twinkling, beaded glory. The traditional furnishings in the inspiration board reflect the antique vibe of the Estelle light, but we sprinkled in a few pieces with a sleeker silhouette, like the Studio Cherry Console Table.

TOP ROW (LEFT TO RIGHT):

To make a narrow hallway feel more open and bright, paint the walls in a light color. We loved this Behr shade, called Ballet Whites (UL130-13), because of the creamy pinks and taupes that you can see in this shade. It also has a warmth that will complement the gold in the mirror and Estelle light.

Lantern Roundup: One for Every Style

Posted by: on February 20th, 2012 | Make A Comment

Just google the word “lantern” and you’ll find lanterns in dozens of home design images. These beautiful light fixtures refer to a style of lighting in which the bulbs are either fully enclosed (usually by glass) or semi-enclosed with a cage. Lanterns have a very traditional aesthetic as they’ve been used to light homes and streets since the 1800s. Lanterns originally were used to shield a delicate candle flame from the wind and elements. While many people still consider them an outdoor lighting fixture, contemporary designs often bring them inside. Today, you’ll find them in every style under the sun and used in just about every room in the house. They’re hanging over a kitchen sink, over an island, over the dining room table, in the foyer, and even in outdoor rooms. Lanterns are a classic pendant lighting option that can be easily worked into the style of your home.

Not convinced? We’ll help you pick the style that works best in your home with this lantern roundup:
