A family relaxes on an outdoor sectional on their backyard patio

Our family pretty much lives outside when it’s warm.  (And honestly, we’re out there a lot when it’s cold too.) My husband Dave and I have three boys and a dog so being outside is a necessity. When we found our new house this past summer, we fell in love with the yard and the outdoor spaces. This past fall, when we moved in, we ate most of our meals outside on the back deck at a big table we have, which was great, but we had nowhere to really veg and relax. When we were contacted by The Home Depot to be  a part of their Patio Style Challenge, I was SO EXCITED because we’d been dying to create an outdoor lounging space/ living room next to our deck dining area. This was just the push (and help!) we needed to get it done.

Here’s what our space looked like before:

Outdoor Decorating with Color: A beautiful covered patio with an outdoor sectional, coffee table and painted floor

In our Style Challenge series, we ask some of our favorite bloggers from around the web to surprise us with their ideas for creating a stylish and functional space using Home Depot products as a starting point.

Kristin Jackson brought all her experience as an interior designer to bear in her outdoor decorating challenge. She came up with a spectacular deck makeover that features a beautiful painted floor, a DIY cinder block planter and other unexpected design touches. Read on as Kristin tells us how brought color, pattern, and function to her outdoor living room.

Living in the South we can generally enjoy the outdoors for at least three out of the four seasons, and even in the winter we have been known to pull out the heater and spend time on our deck. Our favorite thing to do outside is entertain. The men are usually around the grill, the kids are running in the yard, and the ladies are generally chatting it up in the corner in some old worn out wooden chairs that have been painted no fewer than eight times…  not so glamorous.

In our Style Challenge series, we ask some of our favorite bloggers from around the web to surprise us with their ideas for creating a stylish and functional space using Home Depot products as a starting point.

Interior decorator Bryn Dunn participated in our Holiday Style Challenge, and we loved the space she created. She’s back with a complete backyard patio makeover for our Patio Style Challenge. She transformed her brick patio into a lovely outdoor living space, beginning with a new patio furniture set from The Home Depot. Along the way she also hung outdoor lights, refreshed an old picnic table and set out new potted plants and herbs. And best of all, she shows us exactly how she did it!

We like to joke around about how tragically neglected our backyard is, despite that fact that we live outside in the warmer months. Exhibit A, my attempt to replicate this gorgeous outdoor space by Tanglewood Conservatories– but on a virtually nonexistent budget:

4 Stylish Outdoor Decorating Ideas

Posted by: on March 26th, 2013 | 4 Comments

Outdoor decorating ideas illustrated by an Image of an outdoor room with a chic, cozy lounge feel

Take advantage of warmer weather with these outdoor decorating ideas for your porch, deck or outdoor living room. We’ve pulled together four stylish looks — incorporating patio sets, accessories and more — to get you thinking about how to spruce up your outdoor space.

First up, a plush, intimate outdoor living room that also displays a hint of glamour.

The variety of brown tones give the room an earthy feel. But the room is taken to luxurious heights with drapes, and an area rug that helps to define the space. It all adds up to an easy, breezy patio that has a sense of privacy, too.

It could easily be nestled into a California back yard, a stylish boutique resort — or better yet, your own chic, cozy lounge.

Stylish Solar-Powered Outdoor Lights

Solar-powered outdoor lighting inspiration board

On a warm spring evening, we love nothing more than spending a few hours outside under the stars. But even if you enjoy the moonlight, you still need outdoor lighting to make your porch or patio functional. Rather than fooling with wiring and electricity, we love the idea of solar outdoor lights to create warm, ambient light in your outdoor space.

1. Trendscape Large Hammer Solar LED Mercury and Art Glass — We love the mercury glass votive of this solar-powered globe. A powerful solar panel on the top of the light gives it the power it needs to glow from sun-down to sun-up. It also looks just as lovely hanging or on a tabletop.

2. Trendscape Solar LED Party Ball String Lights — These lights would look lovely strung through a pergola or bobbing over a brick patio. They automatically turn on and off with the sun and can withstand the elements.

Inspiration board with striped hammocks, umbrellas, pillows and area rugs

Update your outdoor living space with stripes! Whether you go for the classic cabana stripe or a more colorful option, we love the way a stripe brings personality and symmetry to a space.

STRIPED HAMMOCKS:

The Algoma Hammocks striped option blends a bright blue and black color palette for a relaxed look. For a neutral stripe, we love the Pawleys Island Regency Sands swing for its simple, wide stripe and sandy color. The RST Outdoor hammock bed in Ocean Breeze stripe brings the perfect punch of color to your outdoor space.

Charming Deck Makeover from Jessica of Four Generations One Roof

Posted by: on July 25th, 2012 | 20 Comments

A headshot of Jessica Bruno of the Four Generations, One Roof blog

Guest contributor Jessica Bruno is the self-described “ring leader” of the Four Generations One Roof blog. It’s about life in, yes, a four-generation family living in one house in New England. The blog covers many of the DIY projects the extended family does together, and celebrates some of the chaos of having such a lively household.

Here, Jessica shares with us how the family got together for a fabulous backyard deck makeover.

Living with so many people can be challenging and personal space is the key to success! Therefore, we are constantly updating, remodeling and organizing/tweaking existing spaces to keep our sanity! :) Most of our home projects are done by myself, my dad and Gramps.

Our latest deck makeover was a challenge simply because of the size. As you can see in the prior picture, the pressure treated wood was old, weathered and was thirsty for some stain! We decided that the color scheme would be bright and warm, so we chose a natural cedar tone and linen/moon tan color.

Deck Makeover: The deck before the makeover and after

Isn’t it amazing what some stain will do? This was a water-based stain so the cleanup was so easy! Adding a two-toned stain treatment to a large area can add tremendous depth and texture. “We” decided that “I” would be in charge of the overall color scheme when it came to creating a sitting area that would serve as our outdoor oasis. My dad can build a house, but when it comes to the aesthetics and decorating end of things, he leaves that to the girls in the house!

Outdoor living style challenge

We’ve had the pleasure of inviting six Dallas bloggers to post here on The Apron Blog in our Style Challenge series. It’s inspiration you can use to create the backyard of your dreams!

Now we’d like to hear from you. Tell us which was your favorite outdoor living space. The designers all had their own vision, with some showcasing playful colors, others creating studies in texture, and others a test of space. Maybe you liked them all. Or maybe a particular one of these beautiful spaces inspired you to create your own outdoor oasis. We’ve put together this review of the series, so you can browse through each of the Style Challenge articles, and revisit all of the beautiful, stylish spaces at once!
