One of the keys to starting a new hobby is getting set up with the right tools. You don’t necessarily need a comprehensive array of every tool or gadget you could ever need. Having a good starter kit of the basics will usually be enough.

Reader Inellalexander seemed to be thinking of starting a woodworking hobby when he asked for some advice on wood carving tools on our online How-To Community.

Forums associate Travis Poore, who posts under the handle LawnRanger, had an unexpected suggestion on a tool a wood carver might use:

From the Forums: What Tools Do I Need to Build a Doll House?

It takes the right tools to create something like this.

Having the right tools is crucial to any DIY project. When it comes to certain hobby projects, you can’t get very far at all unless you have the special tools required. Take for instance Home Depot Community member Cassie Kelly, who wants to build her own doll house, but wasn’t sure what tools would work best. She asked the Home Depot’s Community Forums for some suggestions:

So I had this crazy idea of building my own doll house… I have bought random tools along the road thinking they would help, but I am stuck. I need a power tool to help make stairs and the actual furniture. Unfortunately, I am on a limited budget and my hand tools are no longer working with ease. I was really hoping someone might have a couple of suggestions.

One of our Forums associates, who goes by the very encouraging handle shecandoit22 had the first of two responses to Cassie’s query:

10 Things Every New Homeowner Needs Before Move-In

Posted by: on January 24th, 2012 | 6 Comments

Let’s face it, not every homeowner is a DIY enthusiast. While The Home Depot loves the lets-tackle-a-project-this-weekend mentality, we also love the guys who buy a house to live in it – not to live for it.

If you’re a new homeowner, you may not have the need for a wet saw or an air compressor, but there are a few handy essentials that anyone with a mortgage payment needs to have on hand. Here are the items we think you need before picking up your keys:

10 Things Every Homeowner Needs Before Move-In

1. A 6 foot step ladder – At some point you’re going to have to change a lightbulb. Do yourself a favor and don’t stand on that wobbly kitchen stool. Just get a ladder. This fiberglass step ladder can support 375 pounds and is light enough to carry around the house at just 20 pounds.

2. At least two flashlights – You’ll be shocked at the number of dark nooks and crannies in a new house. Inevitably, you’ll have to head down into the basement for something. Keep one flashlight in your toolbox and one by your bedside table. When the electricity goes out you’ll avoid all the bumps and bruises you’ll get searching for the flashlight you left in the garage.

Two Really Big Reasons Black Friday Weekend Is A Great Time To Stock Up On Tools & Hardware

Posted by: on November 26th, 2011 | Make A Comment

Since it’s cold outside, most of us spend the fall and winter months indoors. This makes colder months the perfect time to cross some of those do-it-yourself projects and home repairs off the to do list.  Plus, being inside all winter can get kind of boring. Home improvement projects keep the couch potatoes lurking inside us at bay. All you need is a little elbow grease and the right tools.

Speaking of tools … do you have all of the hand tools you need? Have you made your project lists and checked them twice? Do you need (or want) a new power tool? If you need, want or just like having tools handy just in case, here are two big reasons to shop deals on tools and hardware at The Home Depot.

Choose the Perfect Gift For Dad This Father’s Day

Posted by: on May 10th, 2011 | 4 Comments

I don’t know about your dad, but the last thing mine needs this Father’s Day is another tie that he’ll probably never wear!  After all of these years, I know him well enough to know that nothing makes him happier than fixing things around the house.  On the weekends he’ll gather up his tools, disappear for a while and then reappear to proudly tell everyone that he finally finished building the deck or that he unclogged the sink in the guest bathroom.  That’s why this year the easy part was deciding that I want to give him the convenience of not having to aimlessly search for his tools when he needs them.  The hard part will be choosing from all of the handy tool kits and combos available today.
