How to Build Your Own Backyard Chicken Coop

Posted by: on April 23rd, 2013 | Make A Comment

There are many practical reasons why you might want to build a chicken coop in your backyard and start raising a few hens. For one, farm-fresh, hormone-free eggs are a delicious, nutrient-rich source of daily protein. Another reason is that the eggs you gather from your backyard chicken coop will have more vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids and beta-carotene than the ones you purchase from the grocery store, with less cholesterol and saturated fat.

The best reason of all, though, is that raising a few chickens in your backyard will be a lot of fun.

Chickens make great, low-maintenance pets. But like any other outdoor pet, they need a comfortable home that provides shelter from the elements and protection from predators.

If you have been thinking about what it would be like to have fresh eggs in the morning from chickens you’ve raised, then you have come to the right place.

It’s chicken month over at The Home Depot Garden Club. You will find info on all things related to backyard chickens, from Raising Chickens 101 and the Top 5 Myths About Raising Chickens, to complete step-by-step instructions on how to build a chicken coop.

To help you get started on your hen house, here’s a short two-part video put together by Chris from The Home Depot Community Forums that will show you exactly how it’s done.

Colorful and Easy Gardening Tips

Posted by: on April 16th, 2013 | 2 Comments

We suspect that one of the main reasons more people don’t garden is that they believe it’s too hard. Each year, many a lovely garden goes unplanted because of niggling questions such as: How do I garden? What do I plant? How do I mix the right colors? It’s a shame to see such potential beauty go to waste.

So, if you’re one of the folks who has allowed yourself to be garden-less for any of these reasons, we’d like to share some advice from Jimmy Turner. He’s the senior director of gardens at the Dallas Arboretum and a trusted gardening enthusiast. In this video, he’ll provide useful information on everything from garden design and how to get more bloom for your buck, to tips on soil preparation, composting, watering and more.

Jimmy believes that if you can dress yourself in the morning or put on makeup, then you can absolutely choose plants and flowers that will beautify the landscape of your home. We believe that, too. After watching this video, we think you’ll be convinced as well.

Undoubtedly you’ve heard a lot about container gardening over the last few years. Perhaps you have even considered starting one, but you’ve been hesitant because you feel like you don’t exactly have a green thumb.

Well, container gardening is not only easy and quite enjoyable, it is something you can do successfully on your porch, patio, balcony or terrace – anywhere you want to spruce up with a little greenery. And no matter what you want to plant – flowers, plants, trees or vegetables – there is likely a version of it that will flourish in a container.

To show you how easy it is to start a container garden, we asked Ingar, aka the GreenGiant, from The Home Depot Community to provide us with a short demonstration we could share with you.

Minutes after watching this video you will be ready to plant your own garden using little more than plants, flowers or veggies of your choice, organic potting mix, a small bag of landscape pebbles and a large planter pot.

Once you see how simple a container garden is to create, you’ll want to make more of them and use them to add visual interest, direct traffic or bring a touch of nature’s beauty to your outdoor living spaces.

Spring Lawn Care Tips for Proud Lawn Owners

Posted by: on April 2nd, 2013 | Make A Comment

When it comes to lawn care, it might help to think of it in the same way as caring for a small child. After waking from its long winter nap, your lawn will be hungry. It will need regular attention. And if it’s neglected for too long, your lawn may get quite unruly and eventually go to seed.

It’s difficult to know what is best when it comes to feeding your lawn to ensure proper growth and development. That’s because there are so many different lawn fertilizers on the market. And the nutritional information on the packing can be as difficult to understand as new math. Don’t even get us started on organic lawn care.

So, to shed some light on this subject, we asked Rick from The Home Depot Forums for help.

In this video, he explains the product numbering system and how it relates to choosing the right fertilizer for your lawn. He also talks about the importance of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium for healthy, thriving plant life. Soils often lack one or more of these components, making the addition of fertilizer necessary.

After watching this video, you’ll be able to choose a fertilizer with the proper formula to help you raise healthier lawns, flowers, plants and trees.

The best time to apply fertilizer to your lawn will vary depending on your location. But you can visit our new and improved Garden Club at any time for answers to your fertilizer questions and all things garden-related.
