This Do-It-Herself Workshop was a big success! We were so pleased at the great turnout at Home Depot stores across the country. We have a downloadable set of instructions for the Framing a Mirror with Tile project, too, if you didn’t pick them up at the workshop, or if you missed it.

And if you missed this one, don’t worry, we have more Do-It-Herself Workshops ahead. Check our Do-It-Herself Workshops page for current information.

Sally, of the home improvement blog Homemaking Reality posted an article about the fun she had attending this workshop in the Atlanta area. The article has some great photos of the event and the tile mirror frame project underway.

Here’s the original article announcing the February 2013 Do-It-Herself Workshop:

Ashley and Whitney are sisters who wear many hats. Whitney is a stay-at-home mother with five kids, and Ashley is a stay-at-home mother of three. They started blogging when they both moved into new homes, and were challenged to decorate more space on a budget. Ashley and Whitney love scouring high and low for shanty items and transforming them into something chic, which led them to their blog, Shanty2Chic!  Join them as they learn to transform their homes on a budget, and prove that they don’t need to wait on their husbands to do the big jobs. This month, Shanty2Chic will be hosting one of our Do-It-Herself Workshops at The Home Depot.

Hey there!  We are Ashley and Whitney from Shanty2Chic! We are so excited to share some of our favorite, past DIY projects with you all!

We started our blog in August of 2009, on a mission to decorate our newly-built homes on a budget. Most weekends, you could find us scouring Craigslist for furniture, that we could repaint and use to fill our homes. Fast forward 3 years later and we are building our own furniture, for our homes, with power tools and our bare hands!

White painted cabinets with black appliances and grey counter tops

One of my biggest Do-It-Herself makeovers to date (and also the least expensive) was a mini-kitchen makeover by simply painting my kitchen cabinets. The bland builder grade oak cabinets were given a fresh start in bright white. Just a couple coats of primer and paint completely transformed my space for less than $100.

Real Stories, Real Doing: Home Depot Kids Workshops Create Fond Family Memories

Posted by: on May 31st, 2012 | 7 Comments

The second generation of kids is getting ready for our Kids Workshops. That’s Miley Heywood with her dad Joshua.

The Home Depot has been running its Kids Workshops since October 1997. Kids have built something like 31-million kits over the years–including bird houses, bug cages, planter boxes and many other kid-friendly projects. In the process, these children learned how to use tools and follow instructions, and they’ve learned the joy of completing a project. A lot of parents say the Home Depot Kids workshops can be a wonderful parent-child bonding experience as well.

And now, some families are heading into the second generation of Kids Workshops.

We heard from one such family not long ago. Stephanie Heywood of Mesa, Arizona left us a wonderful comment on an Apron Blog story about Kids Workshops. She and her brother Sterling loved the workshops when they were kids, and now her daughter Miley is nearing the age when she can start enjoying the Kids Workshops. Stephanie told us that finding some of her old workshop projects in her dad’s garage brought back many good childhood memories.

We wanted to hear more, so we contacted her.

Stephanie wrote back, describing the moment she discovered one of her old Home Depot projects. “When my dad and I were cleaning out his garage, I first saw a pencil box that I made. I think I literally dropped what was in my had and flew to get the item off the shelf. “*GASP* I remember making this!!!” she wrote. “After that, I noticed other little things, and I rambled on how I made them with Sterling. If Sterling had been there, I know we would have just talked in circles about how we did this and that and the garage would have never gotten clean.”

A birdhouse project they both did reveals a little something about their personalities.

Martha Stewart Plants Garden Knowledge at The Home Depot

Martha Stewart gives an herb gardening demo at The Home Depot.

Kevin Sharkey and Martha Stewart at an herb gardening clinic just outside of Memphis, TN on April 21, 2012.

When Martha Stewart entered the employee lounge of the Collierville, Tennessee Home Depot on Saturday, one employee’s smile went from wide to beaming to “OMG.” She was meeting her idol at her very own store. “The queen of homemaking!” she whispered when she couldn’t contain it anymore. “Oh, my heart is beating!”

Martha made an appearance at Home Depot #729, just outside of Memphis, to conduct an herb gardening clinic for a crowd of 400. In addition to offering her famously crafty tips on gardening, Martha talked about The Home Depot’s Garden Club, a nation-wide network of over 2 million gardeners, and told some other anecdotes.

Linda Thornton arrived in the parking lot before sunrise—at 4:15 a.m., to be exact—to be the first in line for the event. She didn’t want to wake up early, so she decided to stay up all night to have her run in with fame.
