The staircase might be one of the last places homeowners think to decorate, but there are ways you can add some visual appeal to this under-utilized décor space. Take for instance this DIY project to paint a two-color chevron pattern on your stair risers. You might have seen this project featured in a Home Depot TV commercial.

In this short video below, we’ll take you through all the steps of painting the pattern on your steps. This includes a list of all the materials and tools you’ll need, and demonstrations of how to paint the first “base” color, how to create the chevron stencil and trace the pattern. Then you’ll see how to use painter’s tape to tape off the pattern and paint the darker color.

Once you’ve watched this short instructional video, click on over to The Home Depot’s online Community Forums, where you can see these step-by-step instructions written out, illustrated detailed photos of how to complete this project.

You would get perfect lines without any need for touch-ups if you paint the edges of the painters tape with the lighter colour first. It gives the a perfect seal so that no bleeding underneath the painters tape occurs when painting on the darker colour. Let the darker colour dry to the touch then peel off the tape. When you peel back the tape you will get a perfect line. Don’t leave the tape on for too long before you peel it off otherwise you will pull off some of the dark paint along with it.
